Watching the streaming wars start, my answer is to buy DVDs of shows and movies I like, rip them to , and cancel all streaming subscriptions.

My friend told me about the game "Kind Words" yesterday and it's utterly amazing. It feels like exactly the sort of thing our world needs right now. Also it feels like the sort of thing that my version of the :fediverse: fediverse would really appreciate. The people with whom I interact on here all seem to be kind and genuine. So this is probably right up your alley, everyone!

Rainy but warm morning makes the daily commute a pleasure. I really love autumn weather!

Reality rippled, the walls between potentials weakened. I felt lightheaded for a moment. Out of the corner of my eye I saw movement.

I was surprised, but pleasantly. I smiled. "I think I know you," I said.

He smiled as well, and lifted his backpack. The only real difference was that where the :raspberrypi: was on my bag he had a 🍓 on his.

"I think I am you," he said and we laughed as reality reasserted itself.

It's nice to know I'm doing okay over there.

Decided to go back to light themes everywhere. Gotta admit, it lightens the mood!

Just re-read a blog post I wrote in 2011. It's nice to know my writing has improved in the past eight years. Seriously, 2011 me. Lay off the commas.

You know what I think?

Yeah, me neither.

Observed From the Train

He swaggered out of the library and disdainfully cast the papers he was carrying up and away. For a brief moment they flashed and spun in the sunlight before falling into shadow. He did not look back, nor make eye contact with those who wondered at his act of flagrant littering. He just kept waking. And, when he was out of the crowd, wiped a tear from his eye.

My baby sister (read: 20 years younger than me) is getting married tomorrow. I'm very excited for her and her fiance, but I'm also having all the feels.

If I'm this emotional now imagine what a wreck I'm gonna be when it's my KIDS that are getting married.

There are two problems people run into when they add logging to a project: not logging enough, and logging far too much.

Just updated with a number of clean-ups and revisions and what not.

Also, true to form, immediately after saying I wouldn't be adding any new chapters or sections, I added a new chapter.

so there’s a new search engine for the fediverse: search.social.

most people probably don’t expect their public posts to be searchable, especially if they use mastodon, so here’s how to opt out (for mastodon): open your settings and go to Preferences > Other, then check “Opt out of search engine indexing”.

if you’re an instance admin, you can opt your entire instance through robots.txt. you can set this up in nginx: stackoverflow.com/questions/10

New here? Remember that Twitter is optimized to make you into passive consumers, by en(r/g)aging you with content that you don't choose yourself.

Here, that doesn't happen. But it also means you're responsible to find people to follow.

It will take some work.

If you're willing to put that in, you'll find a wide variety of friendly people that will be happy to have meaningful conversions and laugh and cry together with you.

Start by searching and looking at who other people follow.

Let's make sure we don't give up what they fought for.

That last toot apparently made several people unfollow me 🤔

Is it that you people love Perl that much or that you hate it so much, you can't even stand seeing it in a toot? 😂😂😂

Yeah yeah, I get it, it probably just looked like literal garbage to most people... OH.

Sometimes one distraction just isn't enough. That's where picture-in-picture comes in.

I'm both pleased that my iPad can do this and ashamed that I'm apparently incapable of focusing on anything.

Switched to Firefox on my Windows machines (mainly laptop for astrophotography). Give it a whirl, they have been hard at work to make super awesome.
